About this site

About Jeans is an independent guide to denim and jeans. It explains how jeans are cut and made, how to find a good fit, and how to care for, repair and eventually pass on a pair.

What the guides cover

The guides follow the life of a pair of jeans. The fits, rise and measuring pages help you choose. The fabrics and weights pages explain what the jeans are made of. The washing, repairs and hemming pages help you look after them, and the sustainability page puts it all in context.

About the drawings

The jeans silhouettes on this site are simple diagrams drawn from a small set of numbers: the width at the thigh, the knee and the hem, and the length of the rise. Every fit uses the same base pattern, so the shapes can be compared side by side. They show the general idea of each fit. They are not patterns or size charts, and real jeans from different makers vary.

How the guides are written

We write in plain language and stick to how things generally work. Where details vary, such as fabric weight bands, shrinkage or rise names, we say so and give rough ranges instead of exact figures. We don't invent statistics, and we avoid quoting single numbers for things like the water footprint of a pair of jeans, because published estimates differ widely.

No brands, no partner links

We don't recommend, rate or rank brands, stores or products. The site has no partner links, no sponsored content and no advertising, and nobody pays to be mentioned. We don't sell jeans or sewing supplies.

Care labels come first

Fabric blends and finishes vary. If the care label in your jeans says something different from our guides, follow the label. For alterations on expensive or delicate jeans, a tailor or alterations shop is the safest choice.

Where to start

If you are shopping for a new pair, begin with the measuring guide. Measuring a pair you already like gives you numbers to compare against any size chart, and it saves a lot of returns. If your jeans are wearing thin, go to repairs first. A thin spot fixed this week is far easier than a hole fixed next month. If you just want to understand the words on a label, such as selvedge, sanforized or 14 oz, the fabrics guide covers them in one place.
